When you want to do some wine tasting, that blessing can feel like a curse. How do you choose from all those tasting rooms? And with more and more of them charging tasting fees, how do you find the best deals: from free tastings and fees that apply toward purchases to private tastings well worth the extra bucks?

A couple of local wine connoisseurs have come up with an answer. Former Sacramento Bee food and wine editor Bob Ehlert and his wife Tana, an equally ardent wine lover, have developed a new mobile application called Wine Tasting Tab. The culinary tourism app has launced and the people have spoke! Wine Tasting Tab has been a hit!  Avaliable on all Apple platforms (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) and Motorola Droid smart phones.

By Robert Ehlert - Barbera Festival, held in California’s Amador CountyFor this year’s (second annual) Barbera Festival, held in California’s Amador County, winemakers brought samples of some 85 expressions of this highly drinkable varietal. They came up from Lodi, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz and over from Mendocino, Napa and Sonoma to merge with a majority of Sierra Foothills AVA vintners who have a distinct advantage: a foothills terroir that seems to coax the best and most supple charms from this Italian beauty.Though no one can deny the contrast in styles between the California Barberas and their drier Italian ancestors from Piemonte (some of whom were also present), no one is denying that Barbera has staked out a tasty niche alongside the “noble Nebbiolo” from the old country.  Perhaps the success American vintners are having with the grape has emboldened Italians and vintners worldwide to take Barbera – sometimes dismissed as a mass-produced...
